Daphne was an extremely beautiful naiad nymph, daughter of River-God Peneus.
She was a victim of Cupid’s malice which was induced by Apollo’s scorn.
Cupid drew two arrows which had opposite effects. He struck Daphne with a blunt leaden arrow and Apollo with a golden pointed one.
Instantly the god was bedazzled with love for the nymph but Daphne rejected him.
Apollo pursued the nymph through the woods. When she was exhausted she cried out to her father, Peneus to change her form. At that moment she was enclosed in a delicate bark, her hair became leaves, her arms branches, and her feet the roots.
Daphne, now transformed into a laurel, became Apollo’s evergreen tree.
